Policy Paper “Protests in Lebanon: The Rebirth of the Lebanese Unity”

Date of publication: November 19, 2019

Jana Samadová of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Charles University in Prague published a policy paper for the Prague Center for Middle East Relations (PCMR) of CEVRO Institute, “Protests in Lebanon: The Rebirth of the Lebanese Unity,” on developments in Lebanon amid ongoing popular protests. On October 17, 2019, protests erupted across Lebanon, demanding the resignation of the political class. As protests quickly spread throughout the country, tens of thousands gathered under the Lebanese flag and anthem, regardless of their religious affiliations, rather than the political parties’ emblems and chants. As of November 18, the demonstrations are still not waning despite the resignation of PM Saad al-Hariri and his government, and despite promises of economic, political, and social reforms.
