Policy Paper “Coalition Building before 2023 Presidential Elections in Turkey: What Lies Ahead?”

Ramazan Ozel, the research intern from the Prague Centre for Middle East Relations (PCMR) of CEVRO Institute, published a policy paper on the alliance formations and the current developments regarding the presidential and parliamentary elections of June 2023 in Turkey. The policy paper, which is entitled “Coalition Building before 2023 Presidential Elections in Turkey: What Lies Ahead?” investigates the current developments with regard to the alliance formations and the dynamics of the new electoral system that is expected to have an impact on the parties’ strategies.

As the presidential elections of 2023 approach, the coalition talks in Turkey have been accelerated and the electoral competition is expected to consist of two main alliances together with the potential third alliance that might be pioneered by the pro-Kurdish HDP party. Some of the current developments in the alliance formation have recently taken place and as explained in this paper, the impact of the modified electoral system, the role of the pro-Kurdish party in the electoral competition, and the emergence of two newly formed right-wing parties have also been analyzed.
