Roundtable “Mali: Sahel Security in the Context of European Engagement”

Centre for Middle East Relations (PCMR) of CEVRO Institute organized a roundtable “Mali: Sahel Security in the Context of European Engagement” with Dr. Aly Tounkara, Director of the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies in Sahel and Researcher and Lecturer at the Université des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines de Bamako. The event took place on Wednesday, December 1, 2021 from 12:00 to 13:30 at CEVRO Institute (Jungmannova 28/17, Praha 110 00).

The purpose of this closed roundtable was to discuss the contemporary security and geopolitical situation in Mali and G5 Sahel states in the context of engagement of European militaries in combating radical Islamists. We paid special attention to worsening security situation, European military collaboration and the future of Czech and other European military deployments in the region.

The event was held under the Chatham House Rules.

The roundtable was moderated by Vojtěch Bílý, researcher at PCMR.

Dr. Aly Tounkara is Director of the Centre for Security and Strategic Studies in Sahel and Researcher and Lecturer at the Université des Lettres et des Sciences Humaines de Bamako (ULSHB) and he authored numerous academic texts. He specializes in issues of radical Islamism and frequently comments for both local and international media. His research focuses on security issues in Sahel, political Islam and gender. He conducted numerous studies concerning religious extremism. Ha collaborates with a number of national and international NGOs in Africa.
